  1. This archive contains TrueCrypt 4.3 setup and documentation.

  4. If you have never used TrueCrypt before, we recommend that you read the 
  5. chapter "Beginner's Tutorial" in the TrueCrypt User Guide, which can be 
  6. found in the 'Setup Files' folder.

  10. IMPORTANT NOTES -- PLEASE READ
  11. ==============================

  13. If you are upgrading from an older version of TrueCrypt, it is normally not 
  14. necessary to uninstall it first. However, if any errors occur during the 
  15. process of installation, please uninstall TrueCrypt, restart the operating 
  16. system, and then try to install the new version of TrueCrypt again.
  17. To uninstall TrueCrypt, click Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> 
  18. -> Add or Remove Programs -> TrueCrypt -> Change/Remove. Note that when you 
  19. uninstall TrueCrypt, no TrueCrypt volume is removed or modified.

  22. IMPORTANT NOTE TO USERS WHO USE VOLUMES CREATED BY TRUECRYPT 4.0 OR EARLIER: 
  23. To prevent an attack reported in November 2005, which affects plausible 
  24. deniability, we strongly recommend that you move data from your TrueCrypt 
  25. volume to a new volume created by this version. Description of the attack: 
  26. If a series of certain plaintext blocks is written to a mounted volume 
  27. (i.e., if it is correctly encrypted), it is, with a very high probability, 
  28. possible to distinguish the volume from random data. This affects volumes 
  29. created by all versions of TrueCrypt prior to 4.1, except volumes encrypted 
  30. with AES-Blowfish or AES-Blowfish-Serpent. 
  31. Even if you do not need plausible deniability, we highly recommend you to 
  32. move your data from your TrueCrypt volume (which is encrypted in CBC mode) 
  33. to a new volume created by this version (which will be encrypted in LRW 
  34. mode). LRW mode is more secure than CBC mode.

  37. IMPORTANT NOTE TO USERS UPGRADING FROM TRUECRYPT 3.0 OR 3.0A: 
  38. Note that after you upgrade to this new version of TrueCrypt, due to a bug 
  39. in v3.0 and 3.0a, it will not be possible to mount hidden volumes created by 
  40. TrueCrypt 3.0 or 3.0a located on some removable media, e.g., some USB memory 
  41. sticks (does not apply to file-hosted containers). If that is the case, 
  42. please before upgrading to this new version, move your files to a temporary 
  43. TrueCrypt volume on a non-removable medium or to a non-hidden volume on a 
  44. removable medium, and move the data from the old hidden volume to this 
  45. temporary one. Then install this new version of TrueCrypt, create a new 
  46. hidden volume, and move your files from the temporary volume to it. Please 
  47. see the 'Version History' in the documentation for more information.

  50. IMPORTANT NOTE TO USERS UPGRADING FROM TRUECRYPT 2.1 OR EARLIER: 
  51. TrueCrypt volumes encrypted using the IDEA encryption algorithm cannot be 
  52. mounted using this version. If you have such a volume, before upgrading, 
  53. please create a new TrueCrypt volume using a cipher other than IDEA and move 
  54. your files to this new volume.

  57. Before using TrueCrypt, we recommend that you read the TrueCrypt User Guide, 
  58. which can be found in the 'Setup Files' folder. To view or print it, you 
  59. need Adobe Reader, which is freely available at http://www.adobe.com. Note 
  60. that the program documentation is also automatically copied to the folder to 
  61. which TrueCrypt is installed, and will be accessible via the TrueCrypt user
  62. interface (press F1 or select Help -> User's Guide).

  72. - Free disk space: approximately 2 MB (this does not apply if you run
  73.   TrueCrypt in 'traveller' mode).

  77. INSTALLATION
  78. ============

  80. To install TrueCrypt, run the file 'TrueCrypt Setup.exe'. It is not 
  81. necessary to restart the operating system after the installation finishes.

  83. It is also possible to run 'TrueCrypt.exe' directly from the 'Setup Files' 
  84. folder without installation ('traveller' mode). However, if an older version 
  85. of TrueCrypt is currently installed on the system, it must be uninstalled 
  86. first.
